02 milly start tapping/knock? 50 mi after bought

New to mazda...got a o2 milly...400 bucks....needs timing belt......ok so 3 days i,m done....runs like a dream........ for 52 miles....its tilted a bit sidways ..start it up & has a like cold start tap for a few seconds...on way home ...i try to learn how to use the hold button....not going over 4 grand......later in day ...tapping/kncking really loud.....do some testing.....seems it is over # 6 cyl......so now what...??lifters.....motor????.....new car...i really liked the car & cold air,ride stereo....sunroof,etc....almost caddy like = ) =(

Well, you just found out why the previous owner sold it. The timing belt tensioner is failing and is not knocking. I would do that timing belt job, if it is the 2.5L engine not that bad of a job and parts are cheap. Should be able to get it done in a weekend and there is lots of info on the procedure online as the MX6 and Ford Probe have the same engine. The 2.3L engine is a bit different with not as much info but still doable.
