Hi There,

I owe a 95 2.5L Millenia Golden Edition. The car has run almost 109k miles. Recently I had my tranny rebuild, as the previous owner didn't look after it properly. However, the guys who rebuilt my transmission said that I should pay closer attention to the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor). Now when the tranny works properly I can see that when floring the accelerator, with the transimsion in D or S position, the gear shifts up when the engine reaches 6.500 rpm's. I have been told that it's to high and personally agree with that opinion as the engine gets noisy at that point and the max. torque has already been reached long before. My question is the following: does it mean that I need to replace the TPS or is there any way to adjust that thing? I've consulted the issue with Mazda dealer and they claim that it rather looks like something wrong with the tranny control unit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Will appreciate any tips, as the professionals have different points of view on that issue

are u experiencing bog downs/bucking/power loss whenever you accelerate or are you experiencing extremely poor gas mileage? These are typical symptoms of a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) the problem your describing sound more tranny oriented to me.

Thanks for your replies. Frankly speaking the problem I described above doesn't really affect the driving performance, no power loss nor bog downs. The gas mileage is like 390-400 miles without refuelling, and it's mostly made in the city. Could you let me know what's your mileage as I've never had a chance to compare it with others.

Looking at your opinions, it looks like that it would be wise to have that tranny examined once again, as after the rebuild it works perfect in D position but when you switch it to S and floor the accelerator the shifting from 1st to 2nd is smooth, but sometimes when it is about to shift to 3rd under hard driving I have to deprerss the pedal, otherwise it wont gear up. What do you think of that?

By the way during the rebuild I had the 3rd and 4th gear replaced, the converter has been regenerated plus some minor replacements like: separators, rubber seals etc. Of course the filter and fluid has also been changed.

Well, typically I get about 22-24 MPG city driving.

I have noticed the milly doesn't like to downshift without flooring the gas pedal .

I think its the way the tranny is setup, there is info on this board or at Che's site talking about how it adjusts to your driving style automatically(pretty trick ****).

After two days of writing posts I already have one enemy here who hates me badly Not bad for the beginning :P

I think I can help you to stop hate me, before my tranny has been brought to life the mileage on my Millenia was much poorer. I was told that there is a gear to which car shifts after the 4th.well it's not really a gear as we know it, but it helps the car to consume less fuel and prevents the tranny from overheating. Tranny switches to this gear when cruising on highway with steady speed.

I'm still wondering what may be tha cause of the pooor shifting from 2nd to 3rd with the tranny in S mode. I had 3rd and 4th gera replaced and in D it changes smooth like there was butter inside, but in S you have to let go the pedal, otherwise it stays on 2nd (well sometimes shifts, but don't really know why not always
