Maybe you guys can shed some light on it for me....

But when I'm driving, my car won't shift gears.. it will go higher and higher RPMs and then when it shifts its really abrupt like a huge rock hit my car.

Now I have to gradually shift the car, just EASING into every gear... it doesn't change if my foot is on the floor (as it usually is).

What kinda prices we looking at to get this fixed? My mechanic is *really* good and *very* honest, so I am going to pay less than most, but I don't know what the problem is exactly... so if somebody can throw me a bone here...

Thanks!

Have you been pretty rough on your tranny? My old MX-3 had a similar problem... it came about though after months of me driving hard and occasionally fooling around with the hold button and dropping it in lower gears and stuff . Sold it before it got really bad though

Thats normal. I got a new tranny after having these same problems. Its still the same. The car doesnt shift with the pedal to the floor. You have to push it half way down to get it to really move.

mine does this ONLY when its cool out and the engine is cold. it'll shift into 2nd gear and then won't shift until I either floor it hard or go past 55-60ish. is this happening with you as well, or well it just never shift

shudda just asked me about the problem... u know i should know about the tranny warnings

yes u have the signs of a messed up tranny. a lot of TL's have had problems where some just dont upshift and they get stuck in 2nd gear and cant get past it. others have been driving around 90 and then immediately downshift jerkingly to 50. definitely should get that looked at before u get stuck out in the cold one day

btw, most TL trannies are about 4-5grand to fix. so with YOUR mechanic, lowest id say is 3grand. lets go further to 2500. maybe u shud go easier on the car until then and no hold

Shayaan, from what I heard, there is a problem with the solenoids in that particular transmission in the L models. I believe that there are one or two of these solenoids(cost around 100 bucks), when they go bad they tranny does not shift properly, and many mechanics misdiagnose this, and replace the whole tranny for no reason. I would suggest taking it to a Mazda dealer, and tell them to check the solenoids.

here goes my favourite topic - tranny related

The symptoms that were described in the topic usually occur when people take advantage of the "HOLD" button during overtaking (which is of course fun, but make you shed teers when it comes to paying for it). Since I had my tranny rebuilt almost month ago I forgot that this button exist. When my tranny got broken it didn't want to go above 2nd gear no matter what rpm's I reached, It happened when I was on a trip and tried to make it shift so badly that one time I miraculously reached 7.300 rpm and the engine check light came on (luckily it came off the next day)

Now the tranny is fixed 3rd and 4th gears are completely new, converter has been regenerated, they also replaced some rubber stuff and some minor things, which I even don't know how they call them. The mechanic said that luckily the pump is in one piece and therefore forbid me to use that **** HOLD button, which he said is the easiest way to have the tranny screwed up (use it only when braking with the engine on mountain roads and making your car move on slippery surfaces)

However even though the tranny is like new it still sometimes act funny. Everything's perfect in D but ocassionaly when in S with the pedal on the floor the change from 2nd to 3rd occurs only when I depress it, otherwise 6.500 rpms is reached, the engine roars, but no shifting. Does it looke like something is malfunctioning or is it normal for that freaking transmission? This way or another I will be visiting my mechanic next week in order to change the fluid and filter after the rebuild so I'm gonna ask about it and let you know what he said.
