Hi all,
I got a problem with the antenna. It does not want to go down when I turn the radio off. Similarly, it does not go up entirely (making cranking sound) when I turn the radio on. Do you think I can fix this by myself or better get a new one? Is it difficult to install? Thanks! |

If you can hear the antenna motor running, then the motor is fine. Sounds like the antenna rods (tubes) are dirty or bent, so the motor is not powerful enough to move it properly any more. It's a common problem and pretty easy to fix yourself, sure worth a try before getting a new one...
Turn on radio and quickly jump out of car and lift (pull) up on the antenna - do this ONLY while the antenna motor is running, and don't RIP it up, just help it). You might have to repeat a few times until it's fully extended. You gotta get the whole thing up to full height to proceed, and the motor is not powerful enough so you gotta help it out... Once you get it all the way up, use a kitchen scouring pad (or even steel wool at a LAST RESORT, but better to use one of those nylon pads) and clean the entire antenna till it's shiny and new looking. Next, check carefully and see if any of the segments are bent, and very carefully bend then straight again. Do NOT use force, ease it back so that the segments (they are tubes) stay cylindrical - apart from the obvious bent tubes, look for any "crease" or "lump" just above the join between a segment and the one below it. If you are very careful, you can usually squish these out using small pliers and a bit of patience. Note that you gotta return the segment to straight and ROUND, it won't work if you squish it inwards, or make a crease or a dent it it ! There will usually be slight "slack" in the segments so you can slide each one a bit and test each joint to ensure it's now moving freely. When all cleaned and straight, spray some WD40 or smear some light oil (like sewing machine oil) onto the antenna, then test using the radio switch. If it is working better but still sticking, then let it stop at the point where it can't go any further and take another look at it. Close inspection and a bit of pulling will show you which segments are fully extended and which ones are still sticking - repeat cleaning and bending back those segments. Note that when the antenna is only *partially* extended, you can slide the segments individually - in other words, you won't be able to make the partially extended antenna any longer overall, but you can slide individual segments up or down until you get access to the ones that are not working happily. I've always been able to fit my antennas this way, even one that was bent at 90 degrees by some a**hole. But if all else fails, then the antenna will have to be replaced. JC |

My late '94 has 2 antennas - one in glass and one that raises.
bryanj - ASL is a special setting that apparently changes the DSP settings of the stereo dependant on road speed. I assume it gives you more Bass as you go faster, to compensate for extra road noise. From the 94 Eunos 800 Manual, page 4-96 (my extra comments in brackets) : Quote:
