When an insurance company totals a car, then the insurance company gets to keep that car. They then will sell it to a junkyard for parts or scrap, and they get to keep any money obtained for salvage, you will not get one penny of that money. This is something in the small fine print of your insurance policy, that you signed and agreed to when you took out the insurance policy. Most people don't realize this, until it happens to them. The insurance company will total your car, give you a check for the totalled value, then take the car from you and sell it at wholesale auction and keep whatever the proceeds are.

If you car is totaled, you won't have a car to part out.

However, if they don't completely "total" the car, then you would get whatever percentage the claim money is plus you would get to keep the car.

Only factory installed parts are covered under insurance (unless you take out extra coverage for those items). Since your aftermarket parts would not be covered under the insurance policy, then the insurance company would have to remove those parts and give them back to you before they take the car away. I guess they figured it wasn't worth doing that for your car, so they let you keep the car.

I guess thats one good reason to put aftermarket stuff on the car, because it will be to costly for the insurance company to remove it all in case of a total.

If the car has frame damage that would make the car unsafe to drive, then the insurance company is required by law to "total" the car. Even if the rest of the body damage isn't that bad.

Sorry that this happened to your Milly. But at least is sounds like you are going to have quite a bit of salvagable parts to sell.

j-allan: Don, how can you sleep at night knowing your car is available to drive 24/7? Very, very tasteful mods, IMO, from the signal mirrors to the hids and engine compartment, well done!
Kat_Daddy: btw, i think plat still holds the milly crown here. Don is moving into the #1 contender spot though...
Roof: Don has the makings of a good padawan.
we will have to see where this goes before i take him under my wing
