Received my KPU41048 remote transmitter today.

I went right out to program it and... it works! I'm using the defroster relay for now (since I won't be needing that for a while) along with a green door lock module. A Radio Shack relay spliced in would work just as well as a Mazda "H300" anyway.

All functions work as they should. Keeping the factory security system intact is priceless, really. Being able to unlock the driver's side door seperately from the passenger doors is a little feature you won't get with an aftermarket system.

I still have the FM radio antenna I bought laying in the trunk plugged in to the keyless module. At least Mazda didn't go proprietary on that connector. The transmitter range isn't outstanding, but 5-7 paces to/from the car works fine for me. Maybe extending it behind the C pillar panel might improve that.

For those of you 1995 owners with crappy or missing keyless remotes, swapping the keyless unit from a newer millenia is worth being able to buy the much cheaper 1996+ remotes. Perhaps a 2001-2002 keyless module would swap in. Remotes for those go for less than $10 all the time on eBay and most are in great condition.

You know - I'd love to see a HOWTO

So I have what I think is a base 97 milly with the alarm. How do I find out if it has keyless? Where do I look? What am I looking for?

Great news to hear that the 96 remote works with your reciever. Great info. I'm happy that we were able to help each other out on this one.

It seems the best route to go is 96-00 reciever and fob. If you go 95 the FOB is too expensive and the newer 01-02 reciever (if they are compatible) would be too expensive even though the 01-02 FOB are the cheapest.

Maybe tonight or Friday, I'll post few pics of the parts and where they are located. Everything you need access to is in the trunk just behind the back seat.

Wow, I totally forgot about this thread. Good timing though as it's my day off tomorrow and my camera hasn't been misplaced for once.

I've got half the photos taken of the various needed parts and where they are located. I need to take a couple of more shots inside the car in the daylight and also a shot or two from the service manual. I'll have it up before the weekend is out. Do you have what you need to do the conversion (the receiver and keyless transmitter)? The door lock control unit, extra relay and FM antenna are nice-to-haves but aren't essential.
