Back again needing some more help with my craigslist project. Ok after installing my fuel pump and getting the broken dipstick out, I finally got a chance to make a movie of my winding noise coming from my engine so everyone can hear it and help me out by telling me what it is. I think it might be coming from the supercharger, it is loud an annoying and i need to get it fixed. Here is the link to the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF_hIPh9WIA any help is appreciated.

Ok there is one sound that doesnt belong to there. You were low on oil right? Does the oil light turn on ever? If noone knows try to reach Renboy.

Yes it was low on oil, but no oil light was ever on nor has it ever came on while I have had it up running. The sound is definitely coming from up top though. My 99s made a winding sound until it warmed up then it stopped. I wish I still owned it so I could compare the two sounds. I just need to know if it is the supercharger, that way I can get that and the valve cover gaskets done in one shot.

That is really hard to say, it sounds like it could be the s/c, I am not really sure what else it could be. What I would do is take off the belts and spin the supercharger by hand. Feel for play in the shaft and see that it rotates smoothly. If everything seems good I would start it (it should start) and see if the noise is still there. Then go from there.

You know what, I forgot that it will start without the supercharger belt hooked up. I dont know why I didnt think of that. I am going to do that first thing when I wake up. I will keep you guys posted.... You wouldnt believe what I paid for this little craigslist project anyway

yah, it will. the black car threw the p/s pulley, and i had to cut the belt. i drove it home, about 15 miles. it was smooth, but no power. also, that belt drives the water pump, i had to pull over a couple of times to let it cool. you dont EVER want to change the p/s pump.

Such a loud noise should be possible to pinpoint with a stethoscope I believe, or just the shaft of a long screwdriver towards the ear. Not a pretty sound surely.

Interesting. Its not possible to flow enough air through s/c lobes I think. They are so tight, they become an obstacle. Probably ABV opens up fully to let the air flow the other direction, from filter to intake. This should be a failsafe.

if you have ever driven the car in limp home mode, it is very similar. when rpm reaches about 3k, there is just no power. even a very gradual grade is too much with no compressor. the only difference is that there is no "fuel cut" like reactions. also no power steering. in a slow accelerating situation, i can tell there is no compressor effect till about 3k, because of having driven the car with the belt off.
