Nice... I've had an older version for a while. It uses a back-end database that requires a loopback TCP connection so it needs a port or application exception manually added to the firewall rules in Vista if it doesn't prompt automatically.

I just successfully installed on Vista. Works fine...way better than the old EPC I have. I also have a RC copy of Windows 7 I can try the install on if anyone has trouble with it.

Only one thing had to be done. I had to make setup.exe run in WinXP Compatibility Mode. The installer checks the platform and, not recognizing Vista, returns "unknown" for the OS version and stops the installation. Just open the ISO in Windows explorer instead of using AutoRun, right click setup.exe and click properties. Click the Compatibility tab, then click the check box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" and press OK. Then, run setup.exe and it should proceed normally.

I didn't have to touch any firewall settings afterward, but I performed the installation as an administrator with UAC (User Account Control) turned off (Start > Run > type MSCONFIG > click OK > Tools tab > scroll down, highlight 'Disable UAC' > click Launch > restart Windows). I didn't find any program or port exceptions added to the firewall rules so it should run fine without. I tried running the program under a limited user account instead of an administrator and it still runs fine. The installer created a password protected administrator account called "PQPBSUPDATE" that I can't seem to find any reason for except that it may have been used during the installation. No scheduled tasks or services were tied to the account, so I just deleted it.

Also, the Java runtime environment used for the installer didn't terminate properly when I launched setup.exe without turning on Compatibility Mode. I had to kill the javaw.exe process in Task Manager before I could try running setup.exe again in Compatibility mode. A reboot would have gotten around that too.

I just installed this on a Windows 7 computer. Clean install, works great. Didn't have to do any of those manual workarounds like you have to do on Vista. Just ran setup.exe and it installed clean.

I also delete the PQPBSUPDATE account after install.

I also don't have a DVD burner on this computer. So I downloaded a free product called DAEMON from cnet.com downloads. That product creates a virtual device that you can just open the iso file and install the software directly on your computer without having to burn it to a DVD.

Yeah UAC is better implemented in Win 7 when logged in as an admin, so I can see how disabling it wouldn't be necessary. Strange you got it to install without using compatibility mode unless that's something else that's changed with Win 7. I have a full-fledged copy of Win 7 now but haven't installed the EPC onto it (yet). I also mounted the ISO image rather than burned to disc. MagicDisc is also free and mounts ISO images in Windows. Mac users (including myself) will be happy to note that OSX has had native support for ISOs for years now but whatever.

Without sounding too ignorant, I can't see the application in the original post. Is it still available?

Thanks,
