If a valve cover gasket causes smoke, it would be from burning oil on the exhaust manifold and not through the exhaust. And there are no spark plug seals on the gasket, rather seals of the sparkplug holes. So Voltagenh, it seems your mechanic is abit short of general knowledge as this applies to most cars with sparkplug holes through the valvecovers.

Valve stem seals can cause smoke through the exhaust, this is correct and happends to most cars when milage piles up. But when it comes to this particular car, seal failure in the supercharger is the most likely cause of blue startup smoke. If the 2,3 isn't notorious, it's at least a common issue.

Chaisson, to verify your supercharger condition, unbolt the cover on top of it, this reveals the rotors. If they are either soaked in oil or covered with a black layer, the SC is toast. If they are mainly yellow, it should be ok.

Like this means ok:

Xedosman, can you tell me were the oil is coming from that is getting into the supercharger? Also, where are these "seals" that are leaking to allow oil into the SC? There are a gazillion posts on here about oil in the SC and leaking seals but no one knows or is willing to say where the oil is coming from in the first place or what/where the seals are that supposedly leak to make the SC bad. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

Consensus on this site is that the fragile carbon seals between the SC bearings and the lobe chamber go bad due to neglect (to few and/or bad quality oil changes and/or possibly lack of gentle warmup) and wear, meaning oil can pass the seal and enter the lobes, and further into the intercoolers and intake.

I'm by all means no expert, just referring to other members earlier posts regarding this subject. Usually some of the gurus chime in, be patient

But where, in your opinion, does the oil come from to start with?

Also, if your talking about the mechanical seals in the front and rear of the lobe shafts, they are there to prevent debris from the intake air system from entering and fouling the bearings.

AFAIK, those seals hold up against the boost pressure from passing through to the bearings (probably even suction on the intake side of the SC) and oil from passing through to the lobes and further into the engine. We're surely talking about the same seals.

Just for the record, I've not yet been able to read the recent thread about the alledged different reason to blue smoke due to a vacuum issue, some from the horses mouth story or whatever.
