The fact that they don't have a light on the dash indicating what gear the transmission is in. I read somewhere recently that this was included in the earlier models, but was removed as a cost cutting measure. REALLY MAZDA????

With my tilt wheel system, I made it to 142K before issues started happening. However, I also kept it off "auto" mode since the car was new and I barely ever manually adjusted it. Though, it does stink that the separate components can't be ordered anymore - one needs to get a big chunk of the column replaced, which isn't a cheap part either.
On my 2002, the gear indicator is on our instrument panel. I guess in 2001 with the redesign, they put that feature back into place.
Oh, and i can agree with you on the other items, too. Dent magnet - very true! Hard shifting between 1st and 2nd gear - I also experience this with my 2.5L engine, too. Apparently not only an issue with the 2.3L models.
