use some contact cleaner and an air compressor to blow through the round part of the dial. it works like a ball mouse used to. a rotating wheel with an optical sensor to detect the motion. if dust covers the sensor, then the reading become erratic and you get numbers jumping all over the place. 90psi shop air will do quite nicely. contact cleaner wont hurt. experiment with a combination of both if it's stubborn. if its being a ****, you will have to disassemble and clean the sensor by hand....

i would just get a used one, ebay, they are like 30 bucks. make sure the amplifier is included, most of the time it is. takes like 15 min to change it out. if you are going to take the old one out, and try to r&r it, same labor. i have like 2 spares, and when i see one for about 20 bucks, i get it.

haha I use that stuff on EVERYTHING!

it works really well when cleaning tools as well, especially plastics and rubbers.

It's a silicone based cleaner, so just be careful not to use it on any internal engine parts. The silicone in the spray will kill your o2 sensors in short order, so just remember to avoid the engine bay with the stuff, or just watch where you are spraying it.

it also removes permanent marker and sticker labels that never seem to want to come off. I keep a bottle of this stuff, and windex on my bench at all times hehe
