Default Odd Supercharger Noise

Hey guys..this is my second Millenia but the first supercharger model I own so you can say that I am fairly lost!!

Basically, for the last week I've been driving around with this annoying sound that my Milly makes whenever I step on the gas.

The noise sounds like a flapping noise. The best way to describe it is if you spin a spoked bike wheel and put a playing card inside the spoke. You can also say that it sounds like cards shuffling. A flapping noise that is constant with an increase in RPMs, but quiet, very quiet when it is idling. Actually, the noise is non-existent when the car is idling.

The best guess I can come up with is that it is coming from the supercharger.

Does this mean that my supercharger is failing? A 2001 Millenia S and failing at 78,200 miles?

I haven't seen any blue smoke my tailpipe or anything as other sites and people have pointed out as a tell-tale sign. And since I am extremely unfamiliar with superchargers I don't know how to tell if this unit is failing or not.

One thing I am certain is that the sound became noticeable all of a sudden from one day to another and 2-3 prior to the onset of this noise, I had an oil change at Meineke.

Seeing as how this car is very unique in all aspects, could it be that the mechanic drained the lubrication from the supercharger?

I just need some help with ideas on what this could be. One other thing I know for sure is that I've always had problems with my TCS function that reduces that torque on my car and puts it in "limp mode", but that has never made my car sound how it sounds now. And also a faint rubber-burning smell can SOMETIMES be distinguished in the air. Not always.

Please help!! I appreciate all your suggestions in advance. Thank you.

EDIT - 8/20/11

Scanner came back with the following codes:

P0404 - EGR Circuit Range/Performance Malfunction
P1113 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Malfunction - Lysholm Compressor
P1250 - Fuel Pressure Regulator Control (PRC) Solenoid Valve Circuit Malfunction
P1525 - Lysholm Air Bypass Valve (ABV) Vacuum Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P1540 - Lysholm Air Bypass Valve (ABV) Control System Malfunction
P1562 - Powertrain Control Module + BB Voltage Low

Any solutions to this laundry list problems and the cause of the noise? The car seems to be running well besides that noise, if I continue to drive it will I permanently damage it?

Here's a thought... Go to AutoZone, Advance Auto, Napa, CarQuest, O-Rielys, Pep Boys, Merchants, Tire Kingdom, Canadian Tire.....and ask to have your codes pull for FREE!!

This is just a long long shot out there but don't you think a pending code "could" have led to something a bit more than the fancy orange light coming on?

I highly doubt your supercharge ate it. I suspect an accessory belt, timing cover, or dying idler pulley but the first step is to get those codes pulled.

I had that same noise around the same time I got TCS/TCS Off lights from ABV solenoid failure. I installed new solenoids and both and the lights and noise went away. You may have a pending P1540 code stored.

really??..I would have never made the connection between a noise near the supercharger and a failed ABV solenoid..is there any particular reason why they are connected??

i sure hope that is what my problem is..i live in chicago and since the streets are quite congested and small there is no room to be going fast so i am always cruising but when im in the open road and i push the accelerator down all the way those lights come on for me..at least that is what ive noticed..i always just turned off my tcs but the light next to "tcs off" would come on too..

yea..i deserve that..i know i was careless in not getting it checked out right away..but i hope it hasn't done much damage..ive just been unemployed and couldn't handle the thought of having to fix a car i bought a few months ago..i actually flew out to new jersey and drove it back to chicago for 14 hrs..

tomorrow i will go straight to the autozone nd have them pull me the codes..

and i hope you are right and it is not my s/c..im just hearing the noise from there nd it would be a shame that a car with only 78K miles has major mechanical problems..id probably just sell it..it still runs!!..just with an annoyin ass sound..

If you have TCS lights, it's definitely one or both solenoids. The ABV controls boost levels by acting as a bypass, somewhat like a blow off valve on a turbo car. A malfunctioning BOV or ABV can cause a phenomenon known as compressor surge. Sounded a little like lifter tick when starting from a stop for me.

So I finally got the codes pulled and was told it was the following:

P0404 - EGR Circuit Range/Performance Malfunction
P1113 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Malfunction - Lysholm Compressor
P1250 - Fuel Pressure Regulator Control (PRC) Solenoid Valve Circuit Malfunction
P1525 - Lysholm Air Bypass Valve (ABV) Vacuum Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P1540 - Lysholm Air Bypass Valve (ABV) Control System Malfunction
P1562 - Powertrain Control Module + BB Voltage Low

Is it as bad as it sounds and looks?!?!

I don't even know where to start or what mechanic to turn to..

all I can say is THANK GOD I don't own a 2.3.

I'm not a 2.3 expert so hopefully one of those guys will jump in. I have my theories but I'll wait until the more appropriate persons chime in.
