your "mechanic" is so full of ****, his eyes are brown. dunno about the 2003my and later, but i dont think any of the early mazda engines are interference. i know my old 323gt/gtx was not, the millenia engines certainly are not, the old 626 4 cyl was not. another wannabe "mechanic"

got everything back together and all is fine. i just threaded the tensioner hole to a standard thread and used a piece of all thread with a nut welded on one end and the other machined down to fit in the tensioner pulley bolt. hope this helps some witha similar problem in the future.

sorry, i dont have any pics and everything is all back together. but it was pretty simple...drill out the old tensioner bolt and rethread the hole, take a piece of all thread cut to about 3.5" long and weld a nut on one end then machine the other down to fit inside the the pulley bolt (where the old one threaded in)and bam you got yourself a "new" tensioner.
