Unhappy Can't start 2001 Millenia 2.5... looked everywhere, tried all.

Got my hands on 2001 Millenia 2.5 83K miles. It doesn't start, it spins and sounds like it really wants to start. It gets air, spark, fuel, starter is good, timing/belts are good, fuses are good. CEL is on when in ignition, but it's not giving me a code and was told once it starts that should go away or give a code.

Got it from car auction and was told that it's highly possible that somebody did something to it for it not to start because they really wanted it.

I'll be getting to the whole EGR circuit and will be cleaning everything about that, I'm sure it's been sitting for a while as well.

On top of your suggestions, would anybody be able to provide correct spark wire arrangement (just a pic of yours? and maybe some pics of electrical plugs that are identical and are close to each other that could have been switched?), also, is the key programmed with anti-theft, I have the key that is just metal no plastic, just like a typical non-car key.

Please help I'm extremely frustrated and really don't want to tow it around shops.

Thank You!

No immobilizer in the key.
How do you know fuel is good? Did you pull the plugs to see if they are wet?

A quick and dirty test to see if anyone pulled the fuel relay or messed around with it is to remove the gas cap, stick your ear right on the filler neck and have someone stick the key into the ignition and turn the key to the "acc" position. Do not start the car but just listen for the fuel pump kicking on. If it doesn't kick on and pressurize the lines then you know something is up with your electrical circuit.

Unfortunately there isn't any single one fix that is going to get your car running ASAP. No one on here can diagnose the vehicle without actually being around it to visually see and hear various things. You will have to systematically work from the top down and start eliminating possible issues. I would suggest towing the car to a comfortable place where it can rest for a while during your debugging procedure. The 2.5 is pretty stout engine so I'm sure myself or anyone on here can help you get the ball rolling.

WOW, nice find. Low milage millenias are hard to find. Fuel, air and spark are all good. Crank and cam position sensors are what come to mind and could also be ECM but uncommon. Others here will have better info on what steps to check if you do not find it searching. Incase you do not know the 2.5L motor is used in the 626, mx6 and ford probe and all have great forum sites out there to check.
To check the spark wire arrangement the numbers are on the disty cap and 1-3-5 are firewall side, 2-4-6 are radiator side.
As far as key programmed, I do not know of key programmed to anti-theft from Mazda but it could be an aftermarket add.
Good luck.

Two things;
My car is also from an auction, with only 1 key..the spare one was made at a local locksmith, a good one .. it doesn't have any code but it came with the mazda logo in black plastic..
2nd..as a buyer-sell cars from auctions, in more than one instace some cars came with "troubles" done or produced by the previous owner.
So, yel-low's advice is in order, so far..
