Default Error code 170,173 and 304

Hi Guys,

I am new to this thread..... but i am hoping i will get some info on my situation.

Well i own a Mazda Millenia 2001 not the supercharged. I was driving on the local street and my car started idling and stalling with that the check engine light started blinking so came home and then hooked the obd 2 scanner it came up with 3 codes 170,173 and 304

i researched on these codes but cant find exact answers some people are saying vacuum is leaking some said manifold gasket. i am kinda confused about it.

Well today again i tried to start the car again that wobbling in the engine is there. So any suggestion guys what should i do in this situation.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

fuel trim malfunction(bank1) is 170
Fuel trim malfunction - front (LH) bank is 173
Combustion misfire detected - Cylinder #4 is 304

My guess would be its a fuel problem neither bank is getting the required fuel causing misfire and stalling.
Possibly fuel pump ? But theres more knowledgeable people here than me that will have input soon im sure

don't drive the car like that unless you want to burn your cats up.

170 and 173 are detected by your o2 sensor showing more than 20% fuel trim adjustment which means you are basically dumping raw fuel down the exhaust.

for 304 - check cylinder #4 (front bank, center hole) and see if the plug is good and if you get spark. I'm betting plug or wire is having problems. less likely is the injector is not working, but if the injector was dead, I would not expect to see 170 code.

once you fix 304, the 170/3 codes will also be fixed. you know where to look. now go fix it

here is an example of probable misdiagnose. dunno about the 2.5, but on a 2.3 this is CLASSIC vacuum leak. at idle, intake pulls the most vacuum, 18-21 in. if there is a leak, this is when it will show. as the engine revs higher, there is less vacuum, so a small leak has less effect on actual fuel. i would bet there is broke tees, or broke/split vacuum lines, as it is affecting both banks. diagnose of certain codes for these cars can be unique. fuel trim malfunction can mean too much air, too, not just too much fuel. if one of our cars threw these codes, i would KNOW it was broke tees, or split vacuum line. on another car, something else may be way more common, but on a 2.3(and i would suspect the same goes for the 2.5), vacuum leak is at the top of the list

Thank you very much guys for your quick responses. Last night i performed the vacuum leak test but cant hear any whistling noise or see any leaks but before that i cleared all the check engine codes and the first code which came after resetting the code was po304 which is cylinder #4 misfiring. The car is still stalling and i can feel the engine is not smooth... so any suggestions guys what should be next step? Once again Thanks for all the input.

you are using the WRONG plugs.

now go get some new correct NGK OEM plugs / wires and be happy.

I still warn you. DO NOT drive the car like that or your $100 fix will be a $1000 job when you need a new cat converters. be forewarned.

maybe one of the 2.5 experts can chime in. I don't think off hand it uses the same plugs / gap as the 2.3
