Does anyone know how to program a keyless entry remote for a 1998 mazda protege (es)? The dealer wants to charge $75 and I'm curious as to whether I can program it myself. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

We just got a 02 ProtegeS and the keyless remote did not work so I searched and found this site. The only keyless programming instructions I could find on this site were for a Millenia (sp?) and it was a 98. But I figured what do I have to lose, dealer here wants 85 bucks. IT WORKED! My guess is it may work for all Mazdas. Here it goes if you want to try, took 1 minute.
1. Open drivers door
2. Turn the key to on position (not ACC, but ON)
3. Turn the key off and REMOVE it.
4. Repeat the last 2 steps two times removing the key each time. Keep the key out.
5. Press the light switch in the door (that turns the light off when the door closes) three times.
6. There should be a chime similar to when your seatbelt is not fastened. (Mine did not chime but the door locks went down)
7. Press the lock button on your remote two times.

I guess the original poster said you can program I think up to 4 remotes using this. I only have 1 so I didn't pay attention. You can do a search for his (or her) post though if you need more than 1. I can't believe I found this site and just saved myself 85 dollars. Let me know if this works for your car too.

Thanks for the help but I couldn't get that method to work. I believe it has something to do with the alarm box which is located under the steering wheel. There's a little yellow programming button on it that I'm suppose to press but I can't figure out the procedure. If anybody has any info on that I'd be much obliged. Here is a site I found that has the same alarm system and tells you how to program for a '96 Miata but it didn't seem to work for mine. Mazda Alarm Link
