Automatic Tranny

got an issue that I was hoping someone could help me with.
I have an 1994 Maz Protege DX (16 valve 1.8Ltr engine) with an automatic tranny.
Got into it this morning, started up fine, went to put it into gear, and there were no gears to be found. No Park, No Reverse, etc. Not being a tranny man, wasn't sure what to think about it.
So, here's the questions:
1) I've heard of there being a sensor on Protege Transmissions before, are they also on the automatic trannys as well? And if so, would that possibly cause the lack of gears?
2) Or, if the tranny is completely blown, and I can't find another one locally (within a reasonable price) is there a Ford tranny I could use in its place. If so, year, make and model I could swap from?
