Unhappy 95 protege lurches at steady speed

1995 protege dx 1.5: idles rough, runs way too rich, and at a constant speed (any speed!), it will lurch and buck but as soon as I either accelerate or decelerate, smooths out. only at any constant speed does it do this violent lurching. i've cleaned EGR, throttle body, had injectors ultrasonic cleaned, changed air and fuel filter, and still does it. maybe MAF sensor? any ideas appreciated.

Default checked engine compression

just to satisfy myself--was 180 on all cylinders. Changed plugs while there. No real difference.

I've been reading on various archives of mazda forums that cleaning the EGR valve is not enough, that you have to remove the throttle body to more throughly clean the ports to the EGR. Is this true? Any advice appreciated.

OK, today obtained and cleaned with genuine MAF cleaner a used MAF sensor from salvage yard. it immediately fixed the problem. idled smooth, shifted smooth, drove like a new car . . . for a couple hours. i was elated and then on way home, felt a tiny drop in power, check engine light came on and now won't idle at stop at all *when under load*. Will idle fine and smooth until put in gear or until AC turned on.

HELP!

Is your intake tubing split , cracked or does it have a hole in it after the MAF?

Default no cracks

no, in fact i think this problem was rearing its head for the last owner. i looked through her complete box of service receipts and see intake tubing was replaced in 2005 for 'hesitation'. then plug wires were installed in 2006 for 'hesitation'.

here's what i've done since last post. found and cleaned with CRC a good MAF sensor at salvage yard. after installing it ran fine for a few hours and then check engine light came on again and started stalling under load (AC or putting in gear). i've reset the ECU by discharging a few times and now it's running fine again. but occasionally the light comes on again briefly during the day and goes back out. however it contines to run fine now. maybe O2 sensors?
