mazda 626 and MX-6 - 1979-2002

From 1979 to 2002, the 626 was the standard-sized bread-and-butter of Mazda's North American lineup. You realize this model's importance when you remember that Mazda even made a deal with Ford in order to get an American assembly plant for the car (better known today as AutoAlliance in Flat Rock, Michigan, home of the Mazda 6 and the new Ford Mustang).

Then, in 1988, Mazda used some newfound confidence and turned the two-door 626 into a separate model of its own called the MX-6. Ford, wanting a more modern replacement/supplement for the Mustang, then borrowed this new platform and built the sleek Ford Probe from it (at Flat Rock, of course) for nine years. Both the MX-6 and Probe were dropped due to slowing sales after 1997.

Over their lifespan, the 626 and MX-6 enjoyed five generations:

1979-1982 "CB" or "GB" - the original rear-drive model
1983-1987 "GC" - the first front-drive version
1988-1992 "GD" - refinement of the GC (and the new Ford Probe from 1989)
1993-1997 "GE" - the new organic style (plus a restyled Ford Probe)
1998-2002 "GF" - refinement of the GE, the final 626

To find your paint code, open the driver's door and look on the door jamb for a factory sticker with various information on it - you'll see a two- or three-digit code that corresponds to the colors listed here.

For Ford models, open the driver's door and look for a vehicle information sticker on the door jamb. Just above the line that says "Exterior Paint Colors" is a two-digit printed number - that's your paint code.

Keep in mind that, at least for the early (1989-1992) models, many paint colors have two or three different codes.
