Drivers side knock sensor... I've removed the exhaust shield and all the intake parts above the exhaust manifold.

Now I have to remove the exhaust manifold... but first, the pipe going from the exhaust manifold down to the cat needs to be removed.

I couldn't budge the bolts, so liberally sprayed on WD40, and have to wait for it to penetrate. Is this the only way to get at the **** knock sensor? I can't see how to reach the connector for it near the back of the engine anyway...

PAIN IN THE ARSE.

Yep, it's awkward lying under the car though...

I had problems with those bolts.. I used a ratchet and a long pipe over the handle to get leverage. helped out a lot.. I was able to remove the bolts where the exhaust manifold and that downpipe joined... However, the bolts at the other end, near the CAT, were so rusted and fused together that I broke the heads off the bolts.. I had to drill out the bolts and get new ones..

good luck, man.. just keep and work'en at it.. you'll get it ..

Cool, thanks. Did the heat shield come out before or after you dropped the exhaust pipe thing?

I can't quite get it out yet.

Gonna let the wd40 soak and penetrate for a day or so before attempting to undo those bolts. I got one on the top loose.

Once you removed the exhaust manifold... was it easy to get at the knock sensor? and did you use a wrench?

The heat shield came out after the pipe was removed..

I would have to say, removing the manifold just makes it easier to access. Even after removing the exhaust manifold, I couldn't get any tools to angle and grip well enough to fully remove the sensor. I was able to break it loose with a wrench just enough to unscrew by hand..

There was no way I could have gripped that sensor without the manifold removed...

Did you use the wrench from underneath the car, or from above?

Thanks for the advice, it really helps. There needs to be a Chilton manual or something for this vehicle eh?

Honestly, I don't remember.. I just attacked it every-which-way I could until I got it.. I'm sure i've tried it from above and underneath..

I do remember, tho.. that after I got it to move a little, I unscrewed it by hand from underneath the car..

Hope that helps...

Thank you, that helps immensely.

Did you have trouble getting at the knock sensor connector?

holy crap... liquid wrench really works. the nuts before the cat came off easily after soaking for 20 minutes. The nuts on the downpipe after the manifold came off easily as well.

Now I'm having a bitch of a time trying to pull the down pipe free from the manifold. No luck pulling it free from the cat either. Both are totally loose and wiggly, but seems like the rest of the exhaust assembly is holding this POS together.

Take a break... regain strength and attack in a bit

Honestly, I've never had this much trouble working on any other vehicle. And I'm close to being a licensed mechanic :S
