Well, I've done the first oil change on my 93 9ine (which I've affectionately started calling "New Booty"), and upon refill I noticed a distinctive valve tick. Now, I've owned SHOs for the last 9yrs, and I know when I use too light an oil when the valves aren't adjusted, I get the same tick. I decided to try it out on the suggested 5W30 that the manual calls for since I'm not very knowledgeable on Japanese engines *eventhough the SHOs bullet around with Yamaha engineered powerplants*. I usually go with 10W40 in the summer on my SHOs that haven't gotten the most recent 60K service, and 10W30 on my 91 that has had the full 60K tuneup with valve adjustment. None of them, however, are within 30K miles of the 205K that's on the 9ine...so I have a couple of questions:

1) Is this valve tick a usual occurance on a high milage 9ine, or am I looking at something serious?
2) Is there a necessary 60K tune up needed on the 929's 24valve DOHC motor that includes a valve adjustment as is on the SHOs?
3) If this is necessary, is it too much to go with a 10W40 or even a 20W50 on such a high miglage vehicle?

Thanks to all in advance.

Well, I got really peeved with the constant ticking, so I went ahead and drained out the light oil and went to the other end of the spectrum with the 20W50 AND added a quart of Mystery Oil to coat and protect the internals. After the change, she's purring like a kitten again. Guess that's what was needed, but I'm still curious if this is something serious or just a matter of getting the valves adjusted.

From the on line manual:

VALVE CLEARANCE

NOTE: All piston engines are equipped with hydraulic valve lash
adjusters. No adjustments are required.

If you do a search, you'll find that alot of us have the ticking noise (esp. on start-up). Most solve it with thicker oil. I used an mystery oil too, but I cant remember the brand, "murphy's" keeps poping in my head but I'm not sure.

So, it's nothing to be alarmed about, huh? Thanks.

I noticed the same hla ticking on my car when i changed oil a couple of years ago. I used Castrol oil, and when i changed to Mobil1 the tick went away. So i guess the hla's dislikes some types of oil.

The ticking starts when synthetic oils are used, but im unsure on the reason for this.

btw. i have a 87 929 2.2i (F2 engine, 136hk) But the JE and F2 use the same hla's

My take on what happened to the OP is that you dislodged a minute particle of something when you changed the oil, and that particle found its way into one of the HLA oil passageways, blocking some of the oil from entering the HLA so it didn't fully pump up, thus the ticking. You could have tried adding Mystery Oil or any good brand of 'top-end' cleaner/additive to the fresh oil you first put in, and that may have cleaned the problem up.
I'm not sure that the viscosity has anything to do with clearing a blocked HLA oil hole, or helping to keep them clear. The amount of detergent in the oil used would make a difference though....and synthetics are low in this ingredient I believe.

I understand that, but it still does it on startup untill it idles down...would that have to do with viscosity or a possible blocked hole?
