Hi All,
Got two US model 89 929's. Both cars have a smell of burning rubber after running for a while. I actually think the smell might be that of oil dripping onto a manifold or exhaust pipe. They both have smoke coming from the back of the engine over near the tranny fluid dipstick. I replaced the valve cover gasket on one car, but it didn't cure the issue. I suspect the blind cover on the head and possible the fitting for the PVC valve hose may be the problem. Do the cam cover things inside the head tend to leak too? Can they be replaced on the car without removing the heads? Would a valve job gasket kit have all the small gaskets for the blind cover and PVC thing included? There's smoke coming from the area right away after starting the engine so I do not think the tranny is acting up. One car has 150,000 miles, the other about 55,000 miles. Any other things to check for this issue? I've owned 5 of these now, all seemed to have this problem but I never actually fixed it on any of them. These two, however, are my daily drivers and need to last a few more years.
Thanks for any and all info.

Make shere that all the bolts on the valve covers are tight, they tend to get loose. Ask the person at the parts store about those gaskets, I know that at Autozone thay can bring up a pic of the parts.

I have the same problem. Drove for an hour and when I came to a stop I could smell that burning oil in the cabin of the car. It almost seemed like it was coming through the vents. From the outside you can see smoke rising near the windshield of the passenger area. A few years back I repaired the gasket as it was leaking. It wasnt too long before it acted up again. Even recently I have tighted up the bolts on the head and notice that they easily loosen up. Time for a fresh DOHC.

the cam plugs on the back of the heads is a good place to start.... they leak like nothing else

on SOHC the PCV and Dizzy hole plug (where Left head used on the right bank would have a dizzy) leak as well

do not go wtih rubber O-Rings, go the extra mile and get silicone.... i have replaced 3 rubber ones in 1/2 year, then no problems for a year on silicone...

its just a pain, under valve cover pressure and heat killing the rubber
