Hi Folks,
I need to replace the steering rack boots on my 89 929. I've got the boots, now I need advise on how to replace them. Are there any short-cuts or should I just use common sense and start taking everything apart? I am planning to clean up any crud that might have gotten inside. I am not having any steering issues or grinding noises etc. I don't think any damage has been done. I don't want to drop the rack if I don't have to. With the boots off will I be able to see the rack and pinion assemble to clean it up? What should I use for grease or other lubrication while it's apart? Advise greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich M.

1 Buy two can's of brake cleaner fuild.
2 After you take off your tie rod boot spray the sh*t out it and wipe(repeat) intill clean.
3 Then wipe it bone dry then spray some white grease on the whole shaft befor you put the boot's on.
4 put the boot's on and the tie rods and yoru done.

That is what I used.\
Or you can use some Vise grip's if you want Or a 22m wrench and a pipe wrench will work too
The right side is the hardest

22mm is for the outer part of the tie rod. no use since there is a joint in between.

I thought it would be a easy job, but then i got to the right side. Adjustable wrenches did not fit up there, vice grips slipped, it was a b**ch.
i think its a 34mm. And to make this worse the tie rod that is on this car only has two flat sides, and those sides are on the top/bottom

But i did not see a spot for the second wrench, and i don't think it is.

I don't remember seeing a lock nut up there, and its not in the manual either, maybe you are thinking on the tie rod end. Im going to replace the steeringrack boot.

I did not get a 34mm wrench, so ill just have to use a vice of some sort.
There is a washer behind the tie rod, so that needs to be uncrimped before u remove the tie rod.
