Not sure if this should go in the techincal sub forum or not cos still haven't had a full look around yet.

Lately when driving along the speedo will be sitting on whatever I'm doing then just drop to 0 and occasionally will flick up to somewhere near what I'm doing but when it gets near it does it again and sits on 0.

Anybody got any ideas on what could be fucking up?

Also, no idea if this is relevant to that problem or this is a whole new one, but the Hold light will start flashing on and off for no reason. I think it only does it when the first problem occurs but don't really watch around there when driving.

I saw sim_rx3's topic technical EC-AT automatic gearbox stuff with the link to the Factory Service Manuals but just whiped this computer so haven't got most the programs needed to do anything so can't look at the files for the time being.

If anyone has the real problem/solution please reply or even if you know a tip or 2 on how to give it a temporary fix feel free to help.

Cheers.

My speedo and Hold light stayed on when my speedo cable was disconnected from the Tranny.

there were two systems for the speedo for the 9s
*mechanical - has speedo cable
*electronic - does not have speedo cable

the HOLD light will light up when there are electronic problems for the gearbox, if speedo does not work the gearbox(and ECU) cannot read the speed from speed sensor (yet i knows it is moving), so it will throw a cell.

*mechanical
with your speedo, i would look into the gear in the gearbox (it might be loose, or worn), change the cable, or it might got loose at the back of the dash... could be your actual speedo on the dash.

*electrical
could be the sensor in the box is on the way out, or there are loose connection (worn wires)... also could be the speedo on the dash (less likely)

for the manuals you need Acrobat Reader:

if your hold button is flashing while this is going on is probably pointing towards the speed sesnor. but you need to pull the code to be sure while the hold button is flashing an error.

if the hold isnt flashing you wont be able to pull the code.

id also check all plugs in the back of the speedo cluster and make sure they are secure and all pins in the plugs arent squashed in in the plug itself..

SIM, electronic sensor and not the dash, my Digi dash has same

there are units out there that have just a blank where your cable would go. when i stripped a DOHC royal classic it had no cable, just a blank. then someone mentioned here that mazda even have conversion kits for converting cable cars to electronic sensor type

service speedo cable. Make sure it is clicked into the cluster...check gearbox connection that cable is slotted into keyhole on the gearbox... if problem not solved, check wiring for hold button on gearknob. If this is faulty it will also give a flashing HOLD light.
