Hi guys,

My HC 929 has developed a noise from the rear end, it is sounding a bit like a taxi's diff after 500,000 kms with a worr worr worr sound, which disappears when I turn the wheel to the left or go over about 90km/h, which to me suggests it is something to do with the left rear wheel.

One mechanic said it is the rear wheel bearings, but was unable to get me a quote to fix them, as he said they were "staked" bearings (I dont even know what that means)

Another said he had never heard of 929's having issues with rear wheel bearings, and suggested it might be my diff.

And a third said it may be my park brake, but that works fine.

Does anyone have any ideas? The car has 220,000kms on the clock, and apart from this noise is silent.

i just had the worr-worr, or maybe more of a brrrrrbrrrrbrrrr sound coming from the back of the car,

the sound came from the diff.
u could hear the sound when u werent accelerating / decellerating.
or to check manually. Raise the rear of the car, get under it, rotate the prop shaft 360degre+, listen for abnormal sound.
mine actually made a plong, and was difficult to rotate over a certain point. mind you, this was after it was "destroyed."

check
driveshafts play, center support bearing
bearing play (my bearing was really gone, but still not the source of the sound.) universal joins on the rear driveshafts.

if you are lucky u can pinpoint the sound by rotating prop shaft and rear wheels while listening.

How easy is "not hard"?

I havent been able to find a workshop manual for my car so if anyone has a scan of doing this job I would be grateful.

When my car is off the ground it doesnt make the noise at all...... and it makes it regardless accelleration, cruising down hill in neutral, etc

and when I go around a left hand bend it minimises the noise somewhat.

taking the diff out of a HC.

take of the nuts holding the propshaft
take of the nuts holding the driveshafts.
pull the driveshafts of the diff. no need to take it out from the hub
take off the four nuts on top of diff.
support it, and take it down.

Well an update:

I had the exhaust fixed, now that is running quiet I am no longer sure where the noise is coming from....

So I am going to start with the cheapest/easiest job

Front wheel bearings, ordered and on their way, these I can do myself.

Been quoted $700 to have the rear wheel bearings changed, so that will be a bit further down on my list, just like the $600 for the standard rear shocks.

Well an update.........

Got the front wheel bearing off ebay for $50 for the pair got them in the mail, almost fell off my seat when I saw them!!

They are twice the thickness of my fairlanes!

So I jacked up the car, took off the front wheel, and popped off the hub cover.

Saw no split pin, which really confused me, just a nut with a squashed bit on it.

Tried to "unsquash" the flattened bit, got frustrated when I found I didnt have a socket big enough to undo the nut, and put the wheel back on LOL.

So in the end I got nowhere, and the noise is still there.

I have to drive to melbourne in 3 weeks so I am beginning to get a bit pressed for time.

Will drop in to mechanics tomorrow to figure out exactly how much it is going to cost to get all 4 wheel bearings done.
