Hi:
The tail light check light comes on whenever the combo switch is used (head lamps and/or ext lamps) on a 1988 929. All lamps function when used except for the tail lights. The fuses and bulbs are ok (brake lamps are also tail lights). I'm going to inspect the combo (mfs) switch and would like to check the brake/tail light checker but can't find it. I have a Chilton's manual but it's worthless. I would like any related wiring diagrams and also any illustrations identifying all electrical components near the interior fuse box. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

ok, you need to explain a little clearer...

1> you are talking about the dash light titled "REAR"?
2> does it come on when you press break pedal?
3> does it come on when you turn the lights on?
4> does it come on when you fondle Combo Switch?

the "REAR" light should come on only when globe is out and i think (really not sure) when the break switch failing...

Matsuda 9: Thanks for responding! Sorry about the confusion. I hope this clarifies the issue.

1>Yes. The light coming on is the "Stop and Taillight Malfunction Warning Light" labeled "rear" on the dash.
2>No. It does not come on when the brake pedal is pressed.
3>Yes. It comes on when the tail lights are turned on.
4>No
5>A double filament bulb (4) serves as both brake and tail light. The brake light circuit seems ok.

The bulbs, sockets, connectors, wiring, and ground seem ok up to the fuse block. The fuses in the main fuse block are good also. Are there relays for the stop lights and tail lights. If so, would you know their locations?

Also, is there any chance that you would know where exactly is the brake/tail light checker unit is located? I saw a 1992 929 ref showing that this unit was behind the rear seat in the trunk but it isn't. I think it is near the fuse box next to the brake pedal. This unit sends the signal to the CPU for the warning light when a stop/tail light bulb is burned out, or either the brake or tail light circuit is bad. I was told that this unit may act as a relay for the stop and tail light circuits and that my brake switch might be bad but the circuit seems ok . I want to test this unit and test the tail light circuit further. Without any wiring diagrams or schematics showing part locations, this doesn't seem easy. I think I'll pull out the relays near the fuse box until that warning light goes out and go from there.

Does this sound like a problem that you have encountered? Any suggestions on a course of action? Any chance of reference for the factory wiring diagrams or related component diagrams?

Once again, I appreciate the response. I'm surprised that this problem doesn't seem that common especially since I've had 2 Mazda autos from the 80's that had wiring and connector issues.

ok, that should only react to the brake pedal beeing pressed.

i had that issues and what i did is replace the light bezel panel (where all the bulbs mount)... i had corrosion on the panel, that solved it. The circuit is load sensing from memory, so corrosion has increased the load forcing the circuit to think that the globes are out.... now days i keep a few bezels around... check for corrosion

when i get home, i'll have a look at the manual, might be able to find it

Matsuda 9:

I found the stop and tail light check unit. It is on a panel by the steering column. What a pain in the ass. A main harness runs directly underneath the panel with almost no clearance and the check unit is mounted above the panel. It looks like I will need to move the center console and the bottom third of the dash to get at it. Is there any chance that you have access to a wiring diagram for the tail light and brake circuits?

I thought I had the quick fix was going on when I first saw your last response.

Then my browser froze 5x in a row before I could see your manual pictures. I tried a different browser and guess what... I see 10 pictures listed in your response but none of these pages have content. They start to come up but by the time they are done loading, they are all blank (?). I got to look at a few and that is definitely the info that I need. Thank-you though for the time and effort spent. Much appreciated.

New question for you: Are those pictures posted anywhere? If not, is there any chance that you could send those pictures to my e-mail address? Having the trouble-shooting diagrams and wire diagrams really takes out the guesswork. Maybe those pictures will be able to load if I try later.

Anyhoo, Good Day.

I guess I lied. There are only 6 blank pages for images. I tried checking the gallery but I kept getting any access denied.
