This is on my 1989 Mazda 929 Hardtop

My tail lights, and also all the lighting behind My Gauges on the dash dont work
Had this problem for a while Both problems started same time so thinking they are linked
It has no effect on my headlights even the Blue Highbeam logo still lights up

Ive checked and replaced the Tail Lights which has done nothing?

Are these controlled by a similar circuit?

any help would be appreciated

sounds like its something on your indicator stalk. I had the same problem and it turned out to be a dirty contact within the indicator stalk, I cleaned it up and everything worked a treat.

That or a fuse. I'd check all of them. Sometimes you find one out and you didn't even know it was.

from memory there is a throw over thing on one bolt at the back of the switch (towards the front of the car).... or there is a circlip on the front and back... i'm not sure it has been a while since i did it on the 9, i could be confusing system with a 626, have a look

oh, you mean 'how to take apart the combination switch'. i thought you asking how to take it of the steering column.

I don't think anyone here actually pulled the combo switch apart.... i could be wrong.
