One of the wheel studs broke off on the left side front of my ABS equipped 89 929 (US model). I bought a replacment stud and nut and removed the front hub. Much sorrow, the ABS ring blocks access to the studs. I was able to easily tap loose the bad stud, but there does not seem to be a way to actually get it out with the ABS ring in the way. Have I stumbled upon a compete Mazda engineering gaff? Is there anyway in **** to get the ABS Ring off? I'm soaking in PB-Blaster, looking at this thing I don't see any easy way to fix this at home. Would some rigged up gear puller work? Would this be something that's easy for a shop or am I basically screwed here. Would heating the ABS Ring do any good?
Annoying because I just had a new wheel bearing installed in this hub. Thanks Much. |

Could something like this be made to work?
5 Ton Three Jaw Hydraulic Gear Puller I was thinking, remove the wheel bearing seal so it doesn't get destroyed, place a heavy piece of flat steel across the opening, connect this tool to the ABS ring and using regular gear pulling process, pull off the ABS ring. I haven't figured out how to put it back on, but that'll be thought about later. Thanks |

That is a really nice gear puller.
To put it on a press would be best, but you could use a hammer, or make a press from threaded bar.
