I have read that the books say it is a interferance engine yet, thay can be wrong. A case of some one getting a free 90 mpv because of smashed valves the new onwer put on a timming belt and started right up.

I have a 1990 mpv v6 where the belt snapped as a result of the idler pullies siezing up from lack of greese and also oil on timming belt and the fact belt was OLD! last onwer never took care of it.

Anyway, changed the belt pullies and tensioner cleanes up tensioner piston and it works fine now. aligned up cams and crank on arrows turned crank twice reverify marks all looked good. Started engine and engine will not rev over 1000 rpms and it has a miss. I am sure the timming marks are fine. Verified this on another mazda site by looking at pics.

Anyway, did I just waste my money on this engine if its a interferance engine ? no one seems to know the true answer to this.
