I am having a weird issue with my 1992 MX3 Precidia 4cyl. Within the first 5 minutes of starting the car the engine light will come on (either turns on and off randomly or stays on) then within a few seconds the car will start to die. I can sometimes save it before it dies by giving it some gas but not all the time. The gas pedal seems to sputter gas or there is no reaction at all. After approx 2-5 minutes of driving the problem won't happen again (no check engine light at all). If I stop and restart the car it will go through the same problems until I drive for a while again (2-5 minutes). If it stalls it will start right away or take a few minutes of hammering before it goes. When it starts there is a strong smells of gas/exhaust.

The car had the exhaust replaced from front to back (not muffler) and I had the gas tank replaced. This started happening after this work was done. I also replaced the stereo from the original factory deck to a JVC. Don't know if that made a difference. I have since changed the spark plugs, air filter, increased idle speed (#10/ground method) with no improvement. Could it be the O2 sensor?

I brought the car to a shop where a diagnostic could be done ($100) but they said the problem couldn't be reproduced. I know there is a way of checking the engine codes myself but I am a little confused as to exactly how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

where do you live??
if you live in the usa take it to a local autozone they should be able to tell you what the code is by connecting it up to a machine for free .

DIY code reading on your MX-3 should be the same as this

Use a piece of wire and in the diagnostic box under the hood jump the wire from TEN to GRND and turn the key to the on position the CEL will blink and that will be the codes!!! Good luck!!
