Hey folks. I actually own a 1992 Mazda MX-3 and I BELIEVE it's the 1.8L V6. It doesn't say on the engine, and I can't find it anywhere. It only says 24 valve V6. I have actually had my car almost a year now and i haven't been paying much attention to it...sadly =( I recently put a lot of money into just repairs on my car. I have spend 3k in repairs for my car and it is running amazing right now...I guess my question would be, is it worth it to keep going and putting more money into it. I am starting to become more and more interested in cars and spending more time on mine, so I am not an idiot...I just don't know a whole lot. Any suggestions would be nice.

The more money you put into the car, the longer you need to keep it to get a return on the investment. Putting a bunch of work into a car only to sell it just means you'll lose money.

99% that it's 1.8L. The 2.0L V6 didn't come to the US and the 2.5L is the MX-6/Probe/626/Millenia.

I believe there is a lot of interchangeability between the 1.8 and the 2.0 and the 2.5 mentioned already. If you are talking about performance upgrades and you are talking bolt on, then easy stuff like like CAI, TB, exhaust, possibly UDP. Next step up would possibly be IM and headers as well as flywheels etc. Making some of this fit may take a little customization for that that is made for the 2.5 for which there are lots of parts. Of course if you want to go hard core you can swap in a us spec 2.5 or j spec 2.5 for a whole different level of performance. All depends on how much you want to spend on your car.

My budget with this car is going to be around 6-8 grand. I am not expecting to have the fastest car on the street, just to blow people away with my mx-3 that doesn't get the respect it deserves When i do my exhaust should i do catback? I was thinking about doing my exhaust and then my headers...but if i did my headers first i could run full exhaust afterwards. Any input?

If you do the headers first, you will not feel as much difference as visa versa.

Personally I'd save up and get the whole lot done properly at once.

That is cool as long as he is not trying to track his progress.

If you have a V6, and you're in the US, then it is the 1.8L (at least from the factory.)

As far as bang for the buck, I would seriously just get a Probe GT 2.5L V6 and replace the 1.8L. The problem is that if you are not mechanically inclined, then this could be quite costly, unless you have some friends that can do this for you. Seriously, though, the ease of this swap is ridiculous. Also, since you're using all factory stuff, you're looking at having a decent boost in power with no loss of driveablity or reliablity.

After that, a few bolt-ons, and you'll have a really nice, fun car.

Oh, and as a side-note, cars are almost universally not an investment, they're an expense. You will never get your money back out of it, unless you're playing with collector cars, and even then, that's iffy. We play with cars because we love them, not because we're looking for any ROI.
