Hey i am new to the website. I really need to find out what is wrong with my car. I have a 1992 Mazda mx-3 18.L V6. I have tried everything to get spark in the car. First i Checked the disributor and theres power going to it but no spark at the plug. I read up that these engines are common for ignitors going or distributors. Well im under the impression that an ignitor is int eh distributor am i right? Well so i got another distributor from a scrap yard to see if thats the problem. Well that did nothing there was still no spark. Car someone please help me out because i do not have the money to bring it to a machanic i have to pay for collage in sept. If anyone can help thanks

The distributors on the V6 engines tend to fry the coil. The solution is to get another distributor from a known running engine or buy new from the parts store. Also if you replace the rotor make sure you mark the firing tab location on the shaft ! There are 3 ways to install the rotor only one of them is right. For more information on the distributor problem and some solutions see the MX6/626 section or visit MX-3.com and search Distributor mod.

Same issue here as well. Same car, same year, same motor.. Ended up being the distributor/coil/ignition module. Everywhere I've read, yes, they are common problems in the V6 MX3. Unfortunately, a refurbed one at an auto-parts store costs around $500. If you are lucky, you can find one at a junkyard. If not, Google it til you find the one I found for $130 with free shipping. (Sorry, I never bookmarked it) The same distributor is interchangeable as follows:

Ford Probe GT 2.5L
93-94 626 V6

These cars are hard to find too! Goodluck!

P.S.- Heard also that the 93 MX6 is interchangeable too, but I didn't add it to this list because I never confirmed it... give it a shot too

Garage
It's an old thread but I'd like to give my two cents on this topic as I've been through the same trouble. I bought the MX-3 Precidia with 1.8 98kW K819 engine in it. It had MOT last time 8 years ago. Engine was running, I even drove it onto the trailer and off from it, left it idling outside the garage. Went to check it, engine was stalled. First thought was it has crappy ignition details, old gas in tank, so I didn't bother to make a big deal out of it. Got fresh gas, battery, cleaned plugs, tried to start the engine, no luck. Checked the plugs, no spark. Read the whole world's internet, every thread I read said it's the dizzy. No sh*t, Sherlock! So I tested the ignition coil and ordered new one (€25). Tested dizzy's main plugs to be sure there's all signals that need to be there. Still no luck. Ordered HEI module (€35) to do the mod I had so much read about, did the mod, still no luck. Finally I was convinced that it has to be the hall sensor-igniter modul. Found out that the ignition module is found in the following cars:

CHRYSLER - STRATUS CABRIOLET (JX) 2.5 LX Petrol Engine 04/96 to 04/01 2499 625H
CHRYSLER - STRATUS (JA) 2.5 V6 Petrol Engine 12/95 to 2497
FORD - PROBE II (ECP) 2.5 V6 24V Petrol Engine 12/94 to 03/98 2497 KL
FORD - PROBE II (ECP) 2.5 V6 24V Petrol Engine 10/93 to 12/94 2497 KL
MAZDA - MX-3 (EC) 1.8 i V6 Petrol Engine 01/92 to 01/94 1845 K819
MAZDA - MX-6 (GE6) 2.5 24V Petrol Engine 02/92 to 08/94 2497 KL
MAZDA - MX-3 (EC) 1.8 i V6 Petrol Engine 01/94 to 1845 K838

Advertised the need for igniter/dizzy in bunch of forums and got luck in one I was least hoping for - Estonian american cars forum - tqhq. Guy rolled to the garage in his pick-up, gave me the dizzy from his old Probe, he had parted out. I installed it and voila, the engine cranked. Bought the dizzy for €35, ordered new plugs (€7), leads (€28), rotor (€6), cap (€25). Later swapped in new coil also and sealed the dizzy with silicon as the gaskets were long gone, electric protect spray on harness plugs, strobed the timing.

Hope my information is helping someone skip spending money and time on parts they don't need, maybe even save a couple of nerves.
