maybe some header, straight piping from headers back (could go 2.5 or 3") and intake. I think those would be the easiest. From there on it more expensive and alot harder to do.

Not much for the 1.6. You can get a CAI off of ebay and most parts that fit a First gen Protege LX and 323 (90-94) will fit the MX-3 (Brakes , struts , springs) some with mods (exhaust , CAI). For bigger brakes (and to get 4 wheel disk) you can do a brake swap from a 90-94 Protege LX, has to be the LX, and a MX-3 GS for the rear parking brake cable dont forget to grab the master cylinder and proportioning valve . There are urethane bushings available for the MX-3/Protege. Another good mod is to get the Strut/spring combo from a Ford ZX2 SR and upper strut mounts from a Ford Escort GT.
Other than that are the engine swaps 1.8L DOHC BP and 5-speed G-series trans from the Protege LX / Ford Escort GT / Kia Sephia GS or a 2.5L DOHC KL-DE V6 from a MX-6 / Ford Probe GT / 626 but make sure its the 5-speed G-series trans and not an auto. cuz Mazda auto's suck.

Some other places to look for info/parts would be MX-3.com , corksport.com , ProtegeGarage.com and Clubprotege.com
