93 mx-3 4cyc tranny ticking?

Import newbie, I just bought a 93 mazda mx-3 , for $250 clean title 4 cyl 5 spd. The previous owner said they heard a ticking sound only when they would turn the wheel, they replaced both cv axels and it still made the sound. Then he was backing out the driveway and heard the ticking, when he just reversing straight back, They parked it , for 6 months and now, I have it . What should I fix? Is this the tranny? I'm a hot rod guy , but heard about this deal and jumped on it , I have a "hobby garage" 40 x120 steel building with 2 tool chest and a lift and a few hot rods. Can someone walk me thru? Please help, Thank you

I took it off the trailer and drove it 200 ft and chug ,chug ,chug. My father got in it and chugged some more, than BLAM . Tranny died. Problem solved .
