My truck started making a clicking noise that was diagnosed as a hydraulic lifter noise. When it started, it was only present when I first started the truck. It would stop after a few miles. Now the noise comes and goes after its warmed up. It was a little low on oil so I added THICKER oil and WYNNS oil additive. The noise dissapeared for a while. Now its back!!
It still comes and goes throughout the day. My question is, can I just put up with the noise? Will it damage my engine further? Are they any low cost steps i can take to stop the noise myself?
Try Royal Purple oil with no additives, and a Mobil1 or Wix filter. The Royal Purple is a lighter oil with a strong film strength, so it flows freely, yet behaves like a thinker oil at the same time.
If you put up with the noise, the lifters will wear, and the noise will become more pronounced. Also, try running some AutoRX before you change the oil. That removes deposits that may be interfering with oil flow.
Im going to try ALL those things right away. Thank you. Also, some one suggested a bottle of engine flush and to substitute a Ltr of oil with a Ltr of Lucas Heavy Duty oil stabilizer. Any thoughts??
I have tried the Lucas Oil Stabilizer, and it did quiet the lifters for a little while, the oil turned to sludge more quickly. This suggests to me that the oil stabilizer is really nothing more than just really thick oil.
Its funny you say that, I heard the EXACT same thing this morning. I'll go with the Mobil1 filter and AutoRX (if i can find it) and I'll be sure to post my results for others to read.
I had lifter noise. After I removed the rocker arm and replaced the 12 hydraulic lifters the problem went away. I tried all kinds of things before and nothing really worked until I did the repair myself. It should be easy for a mechanic to do.
