Hello,
I'm new to this forum and had a couple of questions about my b3000 and PATS. First off I'm rebuilding the truck from A-Z and I removed everything related to the PATS system (aside from the ECU of course) The reason for this is because when I got the truck there was no key to go with it. Anyways, it's a long story and off topic... After a few conversations with mazda and countless hours of searching on the internet reading about people saying it can't be bypassed or removed (correct these people at your leisure) I've pretty much hit a wall where I am looking at a few options... 1. Re-install the PATS system (which I chopped up pretty good), buy blank PATS keys and have them programmed at the dealer. 2. Find a donor vehicle and take the computer, PATS module, etc etc... and transplant. (Which I'm told only 99-2000 rangers and b3000 has a compatible computer) 3. Aftermarket computer 4. Get a pre-PATS computer (which I'm told by mazda started in 94...) After researching this a bit more I found that 96-97 explorers don't have a PATS system (correct me if I'm wrong) and I could possibly rewire the connections on the computer... Ok if I've missed any options please let me know.. Now down to how PATS works... I know from practice that the PATS system has a function that cuts off the starter, and that the module sends a signal to the computer to enable the fuel system (again correct me if I'm wrong) What I'd like to know is what kind of signal does the pats system send to the ecu to enable the fuel system? Is it like a regular 5v reference signal or is it some kind of encoded signal? My last question for now is if anyone knows of a pre-pats ecu (ford or mazda 3.0L manual no 4x4) that is compatible with what I'm trying to do? Needless to say I was pretty p***ed off when mazda told me that there are like 60 different computer models possible between 99-2000. And that they did tell me there was a way to bypass PATS with some wiring... They wouldn't tell me what I needed to do... How the **** can there be that many ECUs for such a small year range? ![]() Now people can respond via priv if they are worried about giving information to the wrong type of people such as car thieves. I have no intention of stealing my own truck in my driveway, I just want to see the **** thing running. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

The reasons for so many different computers is that you have so many different setups. You have California and Federal models, Canadian, Mexican, Manual Trans, Two different Auto trans, 2WD or 4WD, different GEM interfaces, different production runs, etc.
Swapping to computers from another year isn't going to work. For starters, you engine calibration is different. you have different sensors, and connectors. Going the aftermarket computer route will work, but how complicated and expensive that can be depends on what trans you have, and how many O2 sensors you have. As far as bypassing the PATS system, the computer waits for the all clear signal from the PATS. The computer can run without the PATS, but you need to get a complete factory service manual from either Ford or Mazda. This is going to have the complete schematics as well as the diagnostic procedures. Between the schematics, the diagnostics, and the theory of operation, you should be able to figure out how to bypass it. However, I would think the best route to go is to just buy the keys and get them programmed. |

Thanks for the info.. I'm actually looking into the wiring schematics more in detail through mitchell. From what I can tell there are only 2 terminals on the ECU that are directly connected to the PATS system.
Does anyone know where I can get the complete OEM shop manual for this truck? Free if possible, if not one where I can get it cheap? I need to know what type of signal is sent through these two wires I'm assuming one wire is to disable the engine and the other is to enable it. |
