Default performance/programmer in '09 B4000; review

New owner of a 2009 B 4000 4X4 auto. and I am trying to find ways to improve fuel economy.
Of course I know about driving habits, tire inflation, routine maintenance etc., etc. as being the basics and that has been looked after.
Have heard that the performance chip/programmer is one way to go. Reviews of the different kinds available run from loss of HP and fuel economy to huge gains in both. So the best way is to hear from those who have "been there, done that" with the B 4000.

Next item is the replacement of the OEM headlight bulbs.
This seems to require complete removal of the entire air cleaner assembly. I can't believe this is needed to change a headlight bulb, but this seems to be the case here. Therefore how does the blasted thing come out? I have tried to pull, tug, twist and pry with no luck. Seems the rubber mounts in the fender hold a death grip on the unit. Am I doing something wrong here?
Thanks folks.

A chip is a waste of money, they just send false signals to the computer in an attempt to make it produce more power. A tuner on the other hand, is great for both performance and economy. An off the shelf tune may not give completely satisfactory results, a custom made tune however can work wonders. A lot of that boils down to the quality of the tune.
