Anyone have long crank times after a few hours? If mine's sat overnight it seems to take alot of tries before the engine turns over in cold NY. Even if its only been a few hours, it takes longer to start. I guess I'm spoiled, but I'm used to about half a second before the engine turns over, especially in a new car.

I would probably have this checked out at your local mazda dealer.
My '96 sunfire (still awaiting delivery of my Mazda 3) starts after .5-1 second after sitting the the bitter cold of Ottawa, Ontario. I can't plug the car in where I live (apartment complex) and I park it right on the street everynight. Thing starts like a dream everyday when I go to work. Definitely not normal if it's not turning over right away, especially for a new car. stokkes |

Mine seems a little long too. I had a TDI golf before and that started quicker and I haven't driven a gas car for a while so I figured that was the way it's supposed to be.

Someone mentioned a dead battery problem on another forum a month or so back. Mine's got about 200 miles on her now, but total driving time is probably less than 5 hours. If batteries recharge while coupled to a working engine, would this have been enough time to recharge it?

Dealer said that it was due to the rubber floormats I picked up at Autozone. I laid it on top of the stock carpet Mazda3 mat. Anyway, I chopped off a square section under the clutch pedal and removed the original MZ3 mat. Starts up lots faster now. I hope all that crap starting that I had didn't shorten the life of the ignition system though.

I'm also in NY and I was a little surprised at the length of time it takes to fire up. My 87 and 89 Jettas I got used to almost just flicking the key rather than waiting to hear the car start because they would always start with just 1/2 second or less. I'd say my M3 takes a minimum of 1 full second but well under 2 seconds. NOt bad, just not as quick as I thought a new car would.
