I have finally completed my complete audio installation on my 3. Using the factory head unit I added new components in the front, full-range in the rear, and 2 amps and subs in the back in a fiberglass box in the spare tire well. The amp rack and subs are accented with blue neons with a plexiglass window. My lighting switch is installed in one of the empty switch housings left of the steering well. After 3 weeks of intense labor the upholstery is going on today, so I will have pics up soon.

If anyone has questions about any aspect of installation, I will do my best to answer them.

Howdy,
Good job on completing the 3 weeks..

I just picked up my new M3s ~1 week ago, with the basic factory HU. I have a portable mp3 player that I want to input into the existing HU, but there appears to be no input socket, line-in, RCA or otherwise.

To your knowledge, is there any kind of AUX input behind the HU, on one of the sound system components? Alternatively, I saw someone on another post talk about piggybacking off the unused MD/TAPE button on the dash..?
Any ideas on this? Thanks

The only thing I can think of is an FM Modulator. It goes where your antenna plugs into your h/u, and piggybacks the FM antenna.

Right now, I have a wireless FM transmitter (iRock) that broadcasts on one of the FM 88.* channels.

Is this what you mean, or something different?

Kinda, but instead of being wireless it would actually plug into the back of your unit .

The wireless one I have right now...well, its not the greatest solution. Basically, its as good as the strength of signal, and the hope that the channel isn't already taken, not to mention the 2 AAA batteries, which get drained real quick.

Do you have any experience with the FM modulator (non-wireless)? Is it also a function of how good the FM signal is?

The kind that plugs into the antenna jack on the head unit would work much better because you are not competing with the broadcast signal.

Its signal stregnth is about as good as you can get from FM(like being right next to the big ass tower). You also have the ability to change frequencies, in case you have interfernece(ie wireless setup you have). So instead of the frequency getting broadcast through your antenna, it hooks up directly with the back of it giving no distortion(keep in mind though its not going to be digital quality).
