I had a similar problem when my car was about a year old. It did clear itself after a few days. It happened again about 6 months later, but would not clear. It turned out part of the filler neck had eroded, so the system was not sealing when the cap was put on. The part was replaced under warranty, but I was told by the dealer that overfilling the tank will cause this breakdown of the part. It hasn't happened since, but the replacement part may have been an upgraded piece. Mine is a 2004.
