Anyone check out the 11 Service Bulletins for the 2004 Mazda 3 at the official NHTSA web site?

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov

I'm particularly curious about No. 0101804:

Make : MAZDA Model : 3 Year : 2004
Service Bulletin Num : 0101804 Date of Bulletin: MAY 14, 2004
NHTSA Item Number: 10007824
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
Summary:
FRONT CRANKSHAFT BOLT SERVICE WARNING. *MJ

Front Crankshaft Bolt? Anyone have any issues so far? I could tell you more, but I don't want to shell out the $50 or so for the full report. I heard if you head to a Mazda dealership, they'll pull-up the bulletin for free.

TSB's, Technical Service Bulletins are for dealer tech's (mechanics) to help them diagnose a problem you have with your car. Unless you find a TSB that fits your problem, just ignore it since it's for the techs and not the public to be concerned with.

A crankshaft bolt involving engine cooling is probably a bolt pertaining to the water pump pully. If you happen to have a cooling system problem you can mention the TSB when you take it to the dealer for a cooling problem.

The crankshaft bolt warning is as follows...

01-003/03 2001-2003 TRUCK 2003 MAZDA6 2.3L - FRONT CRANKSHAFT BOLT SERVICE WARNING

When removing or replacing the crankshaft pulley on a 2001 through 2003 Truck or 2003 Mazda6 equipped with the 2.3L engine, be sure to follow workshop manual procedures.

The crankshaft pulley is not keyed to the crankshaft and when loosened may move position on the crankshaft. The engine MUST be re-timed whenever the crankshaft pulley bolt is loosened, removed or replaced.

Follow workshop manual procdures and time the engine using Special Tools (Crankshaft Alignment Pin 303-507, Camshaft Alignment Plate 303-465 and a standard M6 X 1.0 X 2.25 bolt).

NOTE: The crankshaft pulley bolt cannot be re-used, it must be replaced.

CAUTION: Engine damage will occur if the engine is not re-timed properly. Refer to Workshop Manual (section 01-10A MECHANICAL 2.3L).

NOTE: Damage to an engine caused by not following proper Workshop Manual procedures may result in denial of warranty claims or back charges.

This warning is primarily for both dealers and owners, as to NOT TOUCH the crank pulley bolt without taking precautions first. People trying to install a UDP (underdrive pulley) without using the mazda tools, or the procedure detailed in the service manual, WILL DESTROY THE ENGINE.

Thanks for posting the TSB on the crankshaft pulley bolt.
It appears that, so far, there are no serious mechanical problems with the MZ3. Just the small niggling ones.

You know, I took mine in several times about this and they always said it was normal. Now that I'm 4 months out of my 3/36 warranty they'll probably tell me it's not covered.
