Hi,

I just got my Mazda3 s Touring 5door manual a week ago.

When the car hit around 450 miles or so, I noticed the engine started ticking/clicking.

I never noticed it at all before, but when starting the car the other day I still had my door open and I could hear this very clear ticking sound. It's a constant ticking that seems to be in rhythm with the engine and when I rev the engine the ticking gets faster.

The sound definetly seems to be coming from around the engine.

Anyone else with a Mazda3 have this or might anyone know what it could be?

The car SEEMS to be running great and I love it... but this has be worried.

I have a 2.0 and I definitely noticed the clicking sound from the engine. It's VERY quiet, and with the stereo on volume 1, you can't even hear it. But, if cronuss is as obsessive as I am, when there's no traffic noise and the radio's off, the clicking is audible. I figured it was because I wasn't as easy on the car as I could be during the break-in period. I'm not necessarily concerned with it. I'm more concerned with the very subtle vibrations in the steering wheel. Will the clicking or the steering wheel vibrations get worse as I have the car longer? Thanks.

My 2.3 made that clicking sound when I first got it, but I don't notice it anymore. I noticed it around 150 miles, then sometime, probably a few thousand miles later, I thought about it again and realized I didn't hear it anymore. I believe it's just part of the break in. Won't hurt to take it to the dealer to be sure, but I don't think anything's wrong. Probably just the new valves settling in, or something like that.

There is a chance it is normal wear-in.. However, quite a few people from all model years and both 2.0 and 2.3 enginnes had a butterfly-vent in their intake manifold come loose and make that sound.

I had mine.. the dealer replaced the intake maniforld and everything is quiet again.. take it to the dealer and have them look at it...

BTW also go to www.mazda3forums.com in powertrain section and "Stock issues" subsection, there are several posts about this...

There is no TSB out for it, but my dealer gave me no grief about it whatsoever.

OMG! My 2004 Mazda 3 makes I think the exactly sound you described! I had it checked a few months ago in the Mazda service center and they recond it's nothing big deal, just the timing belt rubbing against something. I so don't believe them! How's yours going now anyway? Keen to hear from it and get it fixed
