the b6dohc has lots of interchangeable parts from the miata b6. cheapest upgrade would probably be miata cams from a wrecker, or even stage 2 miata cams u just have to put the miata exhaust cam in place of the mx3 intake cam and miata intake cam in place of the mx3 exhaust cam. the biggest problem on the 94+ mx3 is gettin rid of the stock rev limiter to take advantage of mods like header cams, etc. which i dont no of any way other than running a standalone ecu. for the sohc get a bp ecu and bp or rx7 vaf and i think that changes ur rev limiter to-7500ish correct me if im wrong but i have the dohc so not to sure on sohc stuff other than it way easier to install a bp into the sohc than dohc. another cheap mod for the dohc b6 would be a turbo manifold off a 323gtx 1st gen probe or mx6 turbo (vj-12,vj-14,vj-20) i think. volvo intercooler a wastegate, bov and tuning the ecu or standalone. this would run at 10+ psi and would be more potent than the 323gtx b6t u can buy to swap in(which has 132 horsepower)no vics on the intake manifold and a worse flowing head and lower compression bottom end. but the stock b6 dohc is reiable on boost anything 15 psi and under any more boost=upgraded turbo, etc. on mx-3.com they say the b6 dohc rods breaking point seem to be 28 psi there was one guy on there with over 200000 kms that installed a turbo at 25psi and the stock bottom end lasted two years of hard drriving aaprox.15000 miles. any pistons etc. are also interchangeable between the miata and mx3 ( high compression or boost pistons)

I agree, I was once told by a factory rep that the 1.6dohc engine was orig a WRC Turbo engine, explaines the oil nozzels that spray the pistons for cooling an lube,When turboed You'll smoke your stock clutch before you will hurt the engine.

Just save yourself the trouble and opt for the mazda bp egine, that way you have the opportunity to go turbo and open up some real possibilties for power. the bp engine is readily available in the protege gt and the escort gt (91-96). For a complete list of the b series engines used and interchangeability check out this link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_B_engine
