I've had my CEL on for about a month now (I know I know). The code came out to be a P0400 which I know is an EGR code. The question is what are some of the ill affects that the cars going to endure with a dirty/broken EGR valve? I have been driving like this for some time now and I dont feel a diffrence in the ride quality. Aside from ride quality can this problem seriously affect the engine? Any advise will be much appreciated.[/b]
Would the EGR valve ports being closed shut by excessive carbon cause another error code to show up? When I took it to autozone they scanned it and got error code P0400, and something else.. they said I would need to buy a new EGR valve, and some 460$ part to fix the second issue. I cant remember exactly what it said/was, but it was something along the lines of idle speed not being correct.. he said I needed a new "Idle air control valve" I think, but can a clogged EGR valve cause this issue?

Im not sure if its clogged yet or not, but I'm going to take it apart soon and find out. Thanks for the very helpful guide, I'm new here.

Correct. That is the right cleaner to use.

The EGR valve is on the back of the intake manifold. It's held in place by 2 bolts. Also, the valve has 2 coolant lines connected to it, which also have to be removed. Once you've taken the valve off of the engine, spray it down thoroughly with carb cleaner and let it dry out. Replacement gaskets are about $7.00 at the dealership, or a bit less at Rock Auto.

When reinstalling the EGR valve, you might want to replace the clip type hose clamps with screw type hose clamps on the cooling lines. Also, don't overtorque the bolts as the intake manifold is aluminum - and, it's really easy to strip them.

That's solid advice, T2T. Those hose clamps are a PITA...I literally ripped one off because I couldn't get it to slide down the hose. I replaced it with a better designed OEM clamp.

For reference, the two bolts are 12mm. I've also found that not all EGR valves on the Millenia have the coolant hoses. So you either have them or you don't. The 1997 milly in the junkyard I looked at didn't have coolant lines for the EGR.
