Here is the DIY for the fog light mod. Simple procedure, sorry about the lack of detailed pics, once I finished the mod I didn't want to take it apart again, but don't worry because this is real easy to do.
The reason the fog lights won't come on whenever you press the button on the dash is because the fog lamps button grounds one end of the relay coil, but the other end of the coil control is connected to the output of a relay which is only activated when the non-highbeam headlights are on. Supplies: # Mini Add-A-Circuit for mini fuse # Female Quick Disconnect # 16 gauge wire # 5 A mini fuse # Crimper/Stripper 1. You will need to cut the trim from around the foglight relay so that the coil pin can be bent outward. 2. If you are looking at the relay plugged into the box, the top left pin (coil) should be bent to a 90 degree angle. So that is top right when you are looking at the pins on the relay. 3. Now crimp the 16 gauge wire to the Add-A-Circuit so that it can reach from the fuse box to the relay box. 4. I used the horn fuse to attach the add-a-circuit fuse, so disconnect the horn fuse and attach the add-a-circuit to the horn fuse slot with the horn fuse in the lower slot and the new fuse in the top slot. --At this point, you should have your coil pin of the relay bent and the add-a-circuit fuse connector attached with the horn fuse and the new fuse inserted. Do not push the fuse in until the relay is back in place. (I blew some fuses cause I accidentally let the other end hit metal under the hood so wait until the relay is in.) 5. After you have plugged the fuse back into the horn slot, hide the wire behind the engine making sure it is not touching the battery at all or anything that may burn or melt it. 6. Now you want to strip an inch or two of wire at the relay end of the connection. 7. Twist the wire as tight as you can with your fingers so that it is easier to insert it into the female connector. 8. Once the wire is twisted, insert it into the female connector, making sure there is enough length so that the bent pin can always be touching it. 9. Now tightly crimp that wire with needle nose pliers, making sure it is not loose. (I even put some electrical tape around it just to be safe) 10. Insert the relay back into its fog light slot. Maneuver the bent pin in such a way that it won't come loose when driving. 11. Now insert the fuse into the horn slot with the two fuses inserted. This should do it! Now, just make sure you always remember to shut your fog lights off because they won't go off by themselves anymore. Revision for earlier years (95-?)
The fog lights in the earlier years operate exactly the same, only instead of grounding the fog relay all the time, it only does when the headlights are on. When you do the mod, you will have 12v constant on one end of the coil, but you will not have ground on the other end unless the headlights are on. What you need to do is 'trick' the CPU into thinking that the headlights are on when they are not, so it will ground the fog relay. [This has to be done with either the mod above or the mod halfway through this post at "Alternative Fog Light Mod" This just allows the mod to work on the earlier years] 1. To get to the CPU, take off the driver's door sill and kick panel (where the fuse box door is) 2. You will need to get a light and look up and in, the CPU is behind the junction/fuse box 3. Look at the top connector, and you should see these wires: white with blue stripe, blue with white stripe, red, green with a yellow stripe, and others. If you see them, you have found the right connector. 4. The wire you need to work with is the green with yellow stripe. You need to find a convenient place to cut the wire and tape off the end that goes off, and strip the end that goes to the CPU. Here is a picture of what wire it is. I left it very large so you could zoom in and see details. Yours might not be so cluttered, I have an aftermarket starter that was very poorly installed. ![]() 5. Now you need to ground the wire, which might require you to add on an extension. Your fog lights should now work independently like the original mod. Alternative Fog Light Mod This is how I did the fog mod, it requires no relays or fuses, just some wire. When done this way, the fog lights will turn on with the parking lights, stay on with the low beams, and stay on with the high beams. In every case, they can be turned off with the switch on the dash. 1. Unbolt the TNS relay and disconnect it. (picture is from a 2.3, to identify it, just go in the fusebox and put your hand on one relay at a time. Reach in the car and turn the park lights on and off. You will feel the relay click when you have found the correct one.) ![]() 2. Use a small tool and insert it in the end of the connector to push down the tabs and remove the orange wire pin. You could also use those inline wire taps if you are not comfortable with soldering or taking the pin out. ![]() 3. Add a wire off the orange wire (this will be run to the fog relay to supply the 12v trigger). Insert it back into the connector. And reinstall the TNS relay. ![]() 4. Now run the wire around the car to where the fog relay is. You can either do as above in the original mod to attach it to the relay, or you can unbolt the relay box, pop off the bottom, and find the four wires that go to the fog relay. The red and blue wire can be cut and soldered to the other end of the wire. Make sure to cap off the other cut end of the wire. ![]() Now, the TNS relay switches with the park lights, so it will send the 12v to the fog relay only when the park lights, low beams, and high beams are on, so no leaving your fogs on. It will need to be done in conjunction with the revision above for it to work on the earlier years also. The final thing that I also did was instead of grounding the green/yellow wire directly like in the revision, I ran the wire to the TNS relay and attatched it to the light green pin the same way as above. This way no current moves through the wire when the park lights are off, and my parking lights blink when I lock/unlock the doors (aftermarket) and this prevented them from blinking the fogs also.
