The breakdown of mazda's relation to ford is somthing like this.

There is a section of the Ford motor company called the Premier AUto Group (PAG)

under PAG the business operations of Astin Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover (which owns range rover)and Volvo are combined. Lincoln was under PAG control until the firestone tire recall when Ford chose to take it out of PAG and bring it back to complete american control.

Ford also sells cars under more than one marque not involved with PAG. Mercury, lincoln, at one time the Edsel, Merkur until 88.

Mazda is involved with an alliance with the soviet union started in 1929 called GAZ. Under that agreement Ford makes Pobeda, ZIM, Volga and the luxury car Chaika

The international Auto Alliance is the division that has to do with Mazda. Ford owns 33% of Mazda shares and has a joint facility in Flat Rock, Michigan. It originally produced the Mazda MX-6, Ford Probe, and Mazda 626, as well as the final version of the Mercury Cougar. It now produces the Mazda Mazda6 and is scheduled to assemble the next version of the Ford Mustang in 2005. The Ford Motor Company has owned 25% of Mazda since 1979, it wasn't increased to 33% controlling interest until 1992.

Another Brand under Ford control is Hertz rental cars.
