The RX-8 tops out on the highway at something like 23 mpg - pretty bad in an age when most V8-powered sedans can hit at least 30 with no problems. And the RX-8 is pretty light in weight, too, which makes it even more depressing.
The rotary's lack of fuel economy was what originally caused Mazda's near-demise in the mid-1970s after the oil crisis - I'm sure they're not eager to repeat that mistake now that gas prices are climbing again.
What is oil going for now, $70 a barrel? Nuts...
