After 3 long years of service, I am replacing my P4 1.8 Ghz. This was a great system then, but unfortunately I got RDRAM "RAMBUS" and I am maxed out at 512 MB. I require more and can't upgrade. My CPU was still decent, but all the video editing I do really bogged it down.
So I started looking at AMDs. I really liked the 64 bit versions of the processors, but couldn't afford the FX series. I know PCI Express is out, but I didn't get since I have a Geforce 4 Ti4200 AGP 8X.
So I found a great deal on a barebone bundle.

Asus A8V Deluxe Motherboard with the Via K8T800 chipset Socket 939
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Socket 939
Fanner Tech AMD K8 Fan
Soyo Gaming Case with Handle
350 Watt Power Supply

I found this bundle on Tigerdirect and it was only $300, well $400 and a $100 mail in rebate. I've been pricing that mobo and processor and thought it was a good deal.

I plan on running 64 bit Mandrake Linux 10.1 and XP Pro. Hopefully Microsoft will come out with something to utilize the 64 bit processor.

So anyone running a AMD Athlon 64 on here? Malice I know you like the Semprons IIRC.

Just ordered it yesterday but should have it on Friday or Monday.
I ordered two sticks of Corsair 512MB 2.5 CAS latency RAM today from newegg.com.
I hope to have it up and running by this time next week.

I have an AMD64 3000+ myself... It's a great processor and I've never had any troubles as of yet

As per Microsoft coming out with something... they will very soon -- Windows XP 64 Bit is supposed to be out by the summertime.

j-allan: Don, how can you sleep at night knowing your car is available to drive 24/7? Very, very tasteful mods, IMO, from the signal mirrors to the hids and engine compartment, well done!
Kat_Daddy: btw, i think plat still holds the milly crown here. Don is moving into the #1 contender spot though...
Roof: Don has the makings of a good padawan.
we will have to see where this goes before i take him under my wing

https://microsoft.order-9.com/winxp64/produ...d=winxp64&id=dl

There is a link to download the beta version of 64bit XP.

Only those with compatible processors should download this.
I got the system put together Friday night. All I can say is wow.
I'm thinking I'm going to dual boot XP Pro and XP 64 bit since its beta.
Pics of my PC to come.

That article pretty much sums it up.
