I've spent a good long while combing these forums, trying to find a solution to my problems, and after finding one, I figured I'd post for the benefit of others who are still doing the same.
When I got my Mazda6 (2005 model year, about a year ago), the previous owner gave me two keys, and three key fobs. He stated that two of them (which he had gotten from the original owner) stopped working, right around the same time. So, they did what many people on this forum suggested: buy a used remote from eBay and try to reprogram it. I found the instructions for programming myself, and tried them to no avail. I would enter programming mode successfully, but would not get any reaction from the car after pressing buttons. I tried with all three remotes, numerous times. I tried all three remotes with new batteries, both inserted correctly and incorrectly. Nothing worked. After doing the diagnostic (4 key turns instead of 3), and receiving a satisfactory response from the car (all systems normal), it seemed to me that the keyless entry receiver must have a problem receiving signal (possibility of a bad antenna). After checking output at a local Autozone (using their RF signal tester), it seemed as though the remotes themselves worked fine. For awhile, it seemed that the situation was hopeless, and that I would have to replace the whole receiver, which I imagined would cost millions of dollars (especially since I was quoted at $150 from the dealer for a key fob by itself). The only other option was that the remotes WERE bad, but still transmitting something (maybe not the exact signal the car needed). Maybe they had gotten damaged, and no longer produced a usable signal. Maybe the used remote from eBay had the same problem, but was tested as working and sold as fully functional. On a lark, I purchased a NEW (not USED) remote ($75, free shipping) from eBay. I got it in the mail a couple days later, and knowing the procedure by heart, opened the package in my car, entered programming mode, and... SUCCESS. First try. I was a happy man. Moral of the story: It seems like most people here have this problem: One day, one remote stops working. They try the other one, and that doesn't work either. They replace the batteries, and they still don't work. Then, they find out about the reprogramming procedure, are very excited, try it, and then are not very excited when it fails. If this sounds like your story, don't waste your time stressing about what could be going on. For me, all I needed was a new (not used) remote, and I was good. It's possible you could still get a used remote that will work from eBay, but it's a craps shoot; it seems that a lot of them out there are broken in some way (though they still transmit signal). Save yourself the hassle and just buy a new one. I kept double-tapping the lock button yesterday while sitting on the couch watching football. She chirped back every single time ![]() New Remote: Visteon Model 41848 FCC ID: KPU41805 Car: 2005 Mazda6 3.0L V6 Manual Transmission |
