Mazda 6I valve tapping

Hello

I have a 2005 6I with 170K miles.

For the past few months I have had a valve/lifter tap noise. I believe these are mechanical lifters. I look at the shop manual, but I don't quite get how to measure the lifter clearance and how to choose the new lifter spacer.

Can anyone help with this process.
